Matthew Shafran is a former prosecutor who handled felony cases in Palm Beach County. He now uses his experience on the other side of the law to defend clients facing a variety of criminal charges and traffic offenses throughout South Florida.

Shafran earned his bachelor's degree in criminology from Florida State University's College of Criminology and Criminal Justice. Soon after, he earned his juris doctor from Nova Southeastern University’s Shepard Broad Law Center.

As a law student, Shafran was passionate about getting hands-on experience in the legal field. He worked as a teaching and research assistant for his first-year criminal law professor and was able to work on cases for the Innocence Project, an organization dedicated to exonerating wrongfully convicted individuals.

Later in his law school career, Shafran was selected as a judicial intern for the Honorable Judge Thomas M. Lynch IV, who was presiding over one of several felony criminal trial divisions in Circuit Court for the 17th Judicial Circuit, located in Broward County. There he witnessed numerous jury and non-jury trials, conducted research and worked one-on-one with one of Broward County’s top judges.

Shafran also served as a certified legal intern for the Office of the State Attorney where he gained valuable experience by trying multiple misdemeanors cases in front of a jury. After earning his juris doctor, he began his legal career as an Assistant State Attorney for the 15th Judicial Circuit.

As a lead County Court prosecutor, he handled thousands of cases, sometimes more than 300 cases at one time. Shafran handled and dealt with hundreds of DUI cases and litigated hundreds of motions to suppress or to dismiss. Additionally, he tried countless DUI jury trials through verdicts involving DUI breath cases, refusals and DUI crashes.

Soon after, he was promoted to Lead Attorney, where he had the responsibility of overseeing and teaching multiple prosecutors, and subsequently served in the Felony Trial Division. There he handled more than 150 felony cases, ranging from third-degree felony offenses to some of the most serious first-degree felony charges.>

Now, as an attorney at Meltzer and Bell, P.A., Matthew Shafran is adamant about helping people who are faced with serious traffic offenses and various traffic violations throughout Palm Beach County and Broward County. He uses his experience as a prosecutor to build solid and strong defenses in his clients' cases.

Client Testimonials
  • ...A long weekend vacation in Palm Beach resulted in the potential for serious consequences that could have set me back in unimaginative ways. M+B was a truly incredible legal advocate and was always accessible within minutes to answer questions and discuss the progress of the case within the system - truly remarkable. I could not have retained better legal representation in my case in Palm Beach County.

  • I just had to commend you on the outstanding job you did on behalf of your client in court yesterday. If my clients were ever to ask me if I know of a good DUI defense attorney, I know to whom I can refer them!

  • I was facing hard prison time and punishment. [Larry] did everything to pull strings and get me into rehab. After meeting with many therapists I finally got one to diagnose me successfully with Bipolar. Thanks to Larry I have been sober since 6/19/09. My health is great and my family life is amazing. It's because he saw something in me and my family that I wasn't just an alcoholic there was something that told me it was something else.

  • Mr. Steven Bell, Words cant explain how thankful I am for you and your firm. I was facing felony charges and even looking at doing 5 years in jail! Not only did you fight for me, you got my case dismissed and dropped. For that, I don't have words to say “thank you” you were always kind and believed in me. You looked for every opportunity and you won! Thank you for being my guardian angel in disguise and steering me in the right direction. You are forever my “too go guy” thank you soooo much!
